The wind moves throughout the earth,
Carrying sights and smells and memories,
Of everywhere he goes.
He’s traveled the world far and wide,
Tasted and seen more than anything,
Blew with every whim and wist that came to him,
A nomad in his own playground.
One night while blowing in the moonlight,
He came upon a creature that he had often seen before,
She clothed herself in the deepest dream,
And danced longingly from moonbeam to moonbeam.
He stilled himself for a moment or two,
Watching her dance along the earth,
Never knowing her vigilant observer,
Was hiding behind the nearest tree,
So obliviously blissful in her wandering was she.
Night after night he came back to see,
What new and exciting dance she would weave,
Spinning stories of past, present, and future,
From the tips of her fingers to the souls of her feet.
Oh how he wished he could be,
Just as graceful as she,
To dance alongside such a delight,
Would be greater than all the earthly sights he’d seen.
One night, daringly did he,
Take to the earth beneath her feet,
Caressing them softly with a breeze so light,
As she danced beneath the night sky.
She gasped, and turned around to find,
Nothing but a chill creeping up her spine,
“Who’s there?” She called.
“I felt you, I know I did…why do you spy?”
The wind, though worldly in his travels,
Is rather shy when faced with the unknown,
Especially an unknown he so enjoyed watching from afar.
Hesitating he dared to whisper…
“You will know soon enough who I am,
But first, you must close your eyes…”
Skeptical she did as he asked,
And with his light breathe he kissed,
From her ear across her cheek to her lips,
Sending chills down her neck to her spine.
“I know who you are…” She whispered,
As she danced away from him,
Eyes still closed she said,
“You are the wind…
Come to dance with me and carry me off,
To far away exotic places,
To the moon, the stars, and beyond…”
He blew about her as she danced away,
Confirming her suspicion, eyes still closed,
“Yes its true,” he said…”If I only I could dance with you.”
With every breeze that brushed against her skin,
She smiled and spun farther and farther from him,
“If you want to dance you’ll have to catch me first.”
“I am the wind, I do what I please,
And I want you to dance with me,
What can I do to convince you…?”
“Oh wind,” She sighed,
“Why would you want to dance with me,
When you could have any beauty,
Any mortal or angel in all the universe.”
Taking her in his arms as she opened her eyes,
Seeing him for the first time as he replied,
“Because I know what I want,
I do as I please,
I am the wind…”
Their lips met with barely a breathe between,
To meet with such fire and lightning,
As if life was given anew each to the other,
And time had stopped for eternity.
But it was only mere moments between,
And suddenly they were dancing,
They danced till the dawn of day,
Their feet wet from the morning dew,
They danced until the dusk of evening,
Till the shadows grew long,
As the light waned from the sky,
Even as the moon peeked a glance they danced,
As if time were of no consequence.
Many days past,
As did the moons glance,
One day the dancer looked up and felt a longing.
“Oh wind…” The dancer whispered in his ear.
“take me with you…”
Holding her close he replied,
“Dancer, I am the wind,
Wild and free,
No one ties me down,
No one owns me.”
“Oh wind, my wind,” She pleaded,
“I would belong to you and only you,
I would leave behind everything,
All promises and vows and family ties,
I would follow you wherever you blew.”
“I cannot take you with me,
Where the wind goes,
Nobody knows,
And nobody follows.”
“But wind…will I ever see you again?”
“Maybe you will,” He kissed her nose,
“Maybe someday when you dance alone,
I’ll join you for a time,
Maybe someday as you fall asleep,
I’ll brush your face with a breeze,
And kiss you goodnight,
Maybe someday,
I’ll come back and take you away with me…”
And with that the wind blew,
Away as she tried to follow,
Away as she danced, as she ran,
Not knowing what direction or where,
With a tear she called out to him…
“Maybe someday…”
